Our History

Alfonso’s Family Trattoria and Gourmet Pizzeria has been a Somerville Tradition since 1978 when its doors first opened in the Downtown Somerville shopping mall on Main Street.
It all started when our dad, Aniello, came to the United States from Naples, Italy in 1953 to seek a better life for himself and his family.  He brought along with him his passion for good food and wine.  He opened his first pizzeria called Pizza Center on the corner of Avenue J and East 13th Street in Brooklyn and sold pizza for 10 cents a slice.  He created and perfected a recipe for pizza that has been used ever since.   After many years of running a successful business in Brooklyn, he moved to Central Jersey and opened Alfonso’s Trattoria & Gourmet Pizzeria in Somerville together with his son, Anthony.
Aniello and his wife Yolanda used many of their authentic recipes from Naples in the restaurant.  They dedicated themselves to bringing their loyal customers the finest quality food.  In 1998, Alfonso’s moved to its now current location at 99/101 West Main Street.   We added a full Service Bar and a Banquet Room for on premise catering.
Sadly, in June 2008, Aniello passed away but his love for good simple food, great wine and quality service is still ever present at Alfonso’s .
Over the past 20 years many of his children, grandchildren and relatives both here in the US and from Italy have worked in various positions as cooks, pizza makers, servers, busboys, hostesses and bartenders.  This is truly a family restaurant and many of the current staff have worked with us for over a decade.  We are all very proud of Aniello’s accomplishments and strive to continue to live up to the standards which he set of serving simple food, with quality ingredients coupled with good service.    We hope you will enjoy dining with us as much as we have enjoyed being part of this journey.

Boun Appetito from the Ianniello Family!!
